The Holding Institute of Laredo originally began in the 1860’s as a school for Mexican American children that weren’t allowed into the regular educational system. Over the past 100 years, the Holding Institute has evolved to a community center that provides over 20 different programs and encompasses over one city block in Downtown Laredo. The Holding Institute is a community center that provides a place to allow families an opportunity to improve their life and status. Because the Holding Institute sees individuals from different communities and different paths of life, the programs they provide range of services from teaching English to assisting those who are applying for citizenship.
Pastor Mike from the Holding Institute highlights how individuals from all walks of life are more than welcomed to participate, volunteer, or join the Holding Institute to help those in need. Due to the troubling and difficult times the world is currently experiencing, the number of individuals at the Holding Institute has increased immensely; the staff and volunteers are trying their best to continue providing services to those in need. United Way supports agencies like The Holding Institute, so that they can provide our community with help that is needed and offer volunteering opportunities to those who wish to make a difference.
Since January 2021, Holding Institute has assisted over 3,000 immigrants with humanitarian aid. They do their best to provide these individuals or families with a meal, a change of clothing, hygiene supplies and a place to rest. Holding Institute tests, the immigrants for COVID-19 and if they are negative offer them a vaccination. When individuals test positive, they offer them temporary shelter until they are able to continue their journey to their next destination. Many times they also provide a means for the immigrants to contact their families to let them know they have arrived to the United States.
